Comparing stock image web sites

I consider myself a good programer but, like most of us, i suck at designing, i know the basic rules of design, how to pick the right colors, how to align stuffs, the golden rule etc. but i can not create an awesome design even if someone point me with a gun, and it is even worse if i try to create the images by myself. Probably if i spend a lot of time trying, i could become good at it, but that requires time, time that i would rheater spend programming, writing or even watching a movie with my family. So i decided to spend the least time possible trying to become a good designer and buy the images that i need in a stock site.

Having decided that the problem is, where to buy them? there are a lot of stock sites, each of them with their own prices and license agreement and in most of them, it is not quite clear how can i use those images on a program.

So i decided to do the same quiestion to the most famouse stock photo sites:

Can i buy an image with an standard license and use that image in an application? (like Iphone or android).

And this was their response:

  • You may use Shutterstock images in computer software, video games, and phone apps. The Standard License allows you to use images only in splash screens or backgrounds for up to 250,000 copies. However, if you intend to use the images as characters or objects or as any interactive part of the software or for an unlimited number of copies then you would need an Enhanced License.Shutterstock

  • The regular RF license covers non-essential usage in a mobile app which has unlimited electronic copies. The W-EL is required for essential usage which has a 10,000 download copy limit.Dreamstime

  • You need to purchase the Extended license to use images in an application.Deposit Photos

  • Yes, if the image is going to be used as an icon or a background within the application, then Standard License will cover the usage as long as the final user doesn’t have access to the original file.

Please note that the image cannot be used as the icon that identifies the application itself as this would be considered branding or logo usage (which is prohibited).

With the Standard License you are covered to 500,000 reproductions/downloads. If there are more than 500,000 reproductions/downloads, you will require the following Extended License: Electronic Items for Resale – Unlimited Run. Also, if you are selling the app, the Extended License – Electronic Items for Resale – Unlimited Run will also cover you for unlimited reproductions/downloads.

Our License Agreement allows you to modify the content from iStockphoto as much as you like to fit the needs of your final project. For both licenses we have (Standard and Extended), we grant a perpetual (never expires), non-exclusive, non-transferable worldwide license.

  • Our images can be used in a mobile application under our standard usage agreement as long as the image is only being used for the background, as a splash screen, or as a small auxiliary icon.Big Stock Photo

After reading the responses i found out that i forgot to ask something important, whit the standard license, is it allowed to use the image for an interactive component (like buttons) and can i edit them as a need it? so i had to ask that question, this is what i got:

  • You may use Shutterstock images in computer software, video games, and phone apps. The Standard License allows you to use images only in splash screens or backgrounds for up to 250,000 copies. However, if you intend to use the images as characters or objects or as any interactive part of the software or for an unlimited number of copies then you would need an Enhanced License.Shutterstock

  • It is fine to use the image as a background or button with just the standard RF license. However using an image as a logo requires the SR-EL which are the full exclusive rights to an image.Dreamstime

  • You can modify images with both licensesDeposit Photos

  • Yes, the Standard License will cover you for interactive elements like a button or an icon within the app.I Stock Photo

  • You are free to edit our images to fit your needs as long as you are not defacing the image or showing the model in said image in a negative light with the changes.

The image would need to be purchased under our extended license if it is being used in an application for something other than a background, splash screen, or small auxiliary icon.
